Trick-or-treating is a lot of fun for kids. For parents, the evening can bring a little anxiety, especially when teenagers head out on their own.
Houghton County Sheriff Joshua Saaranen reminds trick-or-treaters planning to go out Saturday to watch for traffic. He also wants families to have a safe and enjoyable night.
“Make sure your children have some semblance of visibility, for drivers and other people to be able to see them as they are walking up and down our streets,” Saaranen said. “A big thing, with the advent of cell phones, avoid being on your cell phone at all times and pay attention to your surroundings. Make sure everyone has a visual on their children going door to door.”
Saaranen said the region has not had reports of tampered candy in the past. Parents should still inspect wrapper seals for signs of rips or tears. He suggests if parents do come across a suspicious wrapper to throw out the candy or drop off the example to the sheriff office for further evaluation. Police agencies in the region do not have a set event to inspect candy but will help if a parent reaches out.
Several communities in the region have set hours for trick-or-treating on Saturday. Families can find details for their township, village or city on their municipality’s website or on the Keweenaw Report calendar.
Saaranen also reminds adults to arrange a sober driver if they plan to attend a Halloween party this weekend. Anyone who needs a sober driver can contact Superior Transportation and Logistics at (906) 370-4094. Lyft does also operate in the area.
