Baraga won the Copper Mountain Conference volleyball tournament yesterday, defeating Lake Linden-Hubbell 25-22, 23-25, 15-12 in the championship match. Here are the preliminary round scores:

- Baraga downed Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 25-16, 25-13.
- Baraga defeated Wakefield-Marenisco 25-11, 25-19.
- Ontonagon downed Bessemer 25-18, 25-20.
- Chassell tied L’Anse 25-13, 23-25.
- Chassell tied Ewen-Trout Creek 24-25, 25-15.
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City dispatched Bessemer 25-13, 25-18.
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City lost to Ironwood 11-25, 19-25.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated Ewen-Trout Creek 25-24, 25-14.
- Ewen-Trout Creek and Ironwood tied 19-25, 25-21.
- Chassell and Ironwood tied 20-25, 25-24.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell downed Ironwood 25-22, 25-18.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated L’Anse 25-19, 25-12.
- Ewen-Trout Creek got past L’Anse 25-17, 25-22.

The Houghton boys soccer team opens its season with a triple-header today. The Gremlins varsity takes on Lakewood High School from Lake Odessa at 9:00. The Houghton JV faces the Lakewood JV at 11. The Houghton varsity will play Escanaba Bayside at 3:00.
MLB
The Tigers fell to the Royals 5-2 last night. Troy Melton took the tough loss, pitching into the sixth, and allowing three runs – one was unearned. Both of Detroit’s runs scored in the seventh, on an RBI double by Zach McKinstry, and a single by Kevin McGonigle.
After the early August surge that nearly pushed them into first place in the American League Central Division, the Tigers have lost five of their last six games and have dropped back to fourth place, six games behind the White Sox.
The Tigers will visit the Royals again tonight. Drew Anderson will start against Michael Wacha. Coverage will begin at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
Keider Montero will skip his next start. Team officials say he’s recovering slowly from his last start, and needs some rest. He has not been placed on the injured list.
The Brewers shaded the Braves 2-1 yesterday. Milwaukee scratched out both of their runs in the third inning. Jacob Misiorowski allowed four hits over six shutout innings.
The Brewers welcome the Braves again this afternoon. Logan Henderson will pitch against Martín Pérez.
NFL
The Packers defeated the Broncos 33-13 in preseason play last night. Jordan Love and Tyrod Taylor each threw touchdown passes in brief appearances. Kyle McCord took most of the snaps, and completed 12 of 19 passes for 118 yards. Trey Smack connected on all four of his field goal attempts, including a 59-yarder.
The Lions play a home preseason game against the Commanders today at noon.
