CLK Schools voters approved a $21 million bond at the August 4 primary election to address critical infrastructure projects at the main campus.
Superintendent Joel Aisala said the majority of funds will support essential maintenance of the main campus. A very small amount of the bond will support technology upgrades, with the majority of funds supporting critical projects to maintain the historic Calumet campus.
The bond will address heating and boiler system upgrades and replace aging heaters in classrooms at Horizons alternative school in Ahmeek. The Calumet campus includes CLK Elementary School, Washington Middle School, and Calumet High School.
Beyond the school bond, voters across the region approved several local measures. In Carp Lake Township in Ontonagon County, voters passed new library and street maintenance millages while renewing existing fire, library, and street light millages. Interior Township voters approved a new parks fund and renewed the fire department equipment millage.
In Keweenaw County, Allouez Township voters passed the fire protection millage, Eagle Harbor Township adopted the emergency services proposal, and Houghton Township approved an operations millage. Voters across Keweenaw County approved the countywide allocation millage.
In Baraga County, voters passed the county road millage renewal, and Baraga Township voters approved a fire millage.
Looking ahead to November, several competitive races are shaping up. In the 110th district, incumbent Republican Gregory Markkanen will face Democrat Brian Irizarry. In the 109th district, incumbent Republican Karl Bohnak will compete against Democrat Anna Aho Rink.
The 38th Senate District race features three candidates: current 108th District Representative Dave Prestin (Republican), Democrat Kelli Vanginoven, and former Representative Sara Cambensy (Independent). Prestin narrowly won the Republican nomination over former Representative Beau Lafave.
In the Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan representative race, incumbent Republican Jack Bergman faces Democrat Callie Barr of Traverse City.
For the Michigan Senate seat being vacated by Senator Gary Peters, Democrat Abdul El Sayed will compete against Republican Mike Rogers.
In the governor’s race, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson (Democrat) will face Representative John James (Republican).
