High School
The Jeffers High School baseball team will face Marcellus in a Division Four tournament semifinal today at 11:30 at McLane Stadium at Michigan State University in East Lansing. Coverage will begin at 11:15 on 97.7 The Wolf. Royal Oak Shrine Catholic will play Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart in the other Division Four semifinal this morning at 9:00. The championship game is scheduled for tomorrow at 2:30. If the Jets advance, that game will also be broadcast on 97.7 The Wolf.
NBA
The NBA championship series continues tomorrow night when the Spurs host the Knicks. New York leads the series 3-1.
NHL
The Hurricanes got past the Golden Knights 4-2 last night. Carolina leads the Stanley Cup final 3-2, with game six set for Sunday in Vegas.
Twilight League
Both of last night’s Copper Country Twilight Baseball League games were rained out.
MLB
The Tigers bombed the Twins 11-0 yesterday afternoon. Spencer Torkelson, Gleyber Torres, Colt Keith, Riley Greene, Zach McKinstry and Wenceel Perez all hit home runs. Keider Montero pitched into the seventh, and gave up just four hits. Tyler Holton and Beau Brieske completed the shutout.
The Tigers visit the Guardians tonight. Jack Flaherty will start against Tanner Bibee. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Two of the Tigers’ ailing pitchers will return this weekend. Tarik Skubal is scheduled to start tomorrow’s game, after recovering from minor elbow surgery. Casey Mize is set to start on Sunday, after being sidelined with groin tightness. The jury remains out on Justin Verlander’s status, after he allowed four home runs in a rehab start with Toledo Tuesday.
The Tigers have claimed outfielder James Outman off waivers from the Twins. They created a space on the 40-man roster by moving Javier Báez to the 60-day injured list. Outman has no minor league options, so someone will need to be cut from the current 25-man roster to open a slot. Outman is considered a good defensive outfielder, but a light hitter. With Báez and Parker Meadows on the long-term injury list, Outman could provide some help in center field.
The Brewers had yesterday off, and host the Phillies tonight. Jacob Misiorowski will pitch against Andrew Painter.
College Basketball
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team has a new assistant coach. Evie Wolshire has joined the staff of new head coach Eric Gruber. She worked with Gruber as graduate assistant at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville the past two seasons.
Wolshire played college basketball at Wittenberg University, where she served as team captain while helping lead the squad to two conference championships. She also holds the school’s record with 11 assists in one game.
Running
You have one final opportunity to register for tonight’s Thatcher Markham Memorial 5k Run.
You can sign up and pick up packets this afternoon between 4:00 and 6:00 at the Keweenaw Co-Op in Hancock.
Packets may be picked up by others.
The run begins tonight at 7:00 at the west edge of downtown Hancock, ahead of the annual Bridgefest Parade.
Fishing
With a Small Craft Advisory in effect for Keweenaw Bay today, and, with rough water expected, today’s lead-in tournament for the Keweenaw Bay Fishing Classic has been canceled. Prize money will be rolled into the pool for the main tournament tomorrow. Organizers are watching tomorrow’s weather carefully. Contingency plans, if conditions are unfavorable, will be to either shorten the tournament or delay it until Sunday.
Events associated with the Lake Trout Festival in downtown L’Anse will proceed as scheduled tomorrow.
