High School
The Jeffers High School baseball team is headed to East Lansing, following a pair of victories on Saturday. The Jets blanked Mio 10-0 in a five-inning mercy rule game to win their Division Four regional title. Brogan Turner held the Thunderbolts to just three hits, while striking out six. He also had two hits, including a triple, drove in two runs, and scored twice. Kasen Helminen also had two hits, including a triple, and drove in two runs. Jeffers outscored Norway 15-8 in their quarterfinal game.
The Jets will face Marcellus in a semifinal contest Friday at 11:30 at Michigan State University’s McLane Stadium in East Lansing. Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart and Royal Oak Shrine Catholic will meet in the other semifinal.
The Hancock baseball team claimed a Division Three regional crown with a 3-0 victory over Manistee. Ben Keranen struck out 11 batters and allowed just one hit to earn the complete-game win. He also had two hits and scored twice. The Bulldogs fell to Traverse City St. Francis 15-2 in their quarterfinal match. The Gladiators held the ‘Dogs to just one hit.
The Calumet softball season ended with a 14-0 loss to Boyne City in their Division Three regional final at Cheboygan. The Ramblers held the Copper Kings to just three singles.
L’Anse’s softball season ended with a 13-9 loss to Superior Central in a Division Four regional semifinal at the Bone Yard in Lake Linden. The Eagles built an early four-run lead. The Purple Hornets rallied to tie the game, but a late surge by Superior Central secured the win.
Hancock suffered a narrow 4-3 loss to Norway in its Division Four regional softball semifinal at the Bone Yard. The Bulldogs grabbed an early lead when Emery Chynoweth raced home from first base on a throwing error in the second inning. The Knights scored all four of their runs in the fourth inning – all were unearned. The Bulldogs narrowed the gap with a two-run Diem Kilpela double in the top of the seventh, but couldn’t complete the comeback. Lucy Biekkala struck out 12 Knights, but took the tough loss in the circle.
Norway went on to defeat Superior Central 11-0 to win the regional title. The Knights will face Hillman in a quarterfinal game Tuesday at Cedarville.
NBA
The Knicks host the Spurs in game three of the NBA championship series tomorrow. New York leads the series 2-0.
NHL
The Golden Knights shaded the Hurricanes 5-4 in double overtime Saturday. Vegas leads the Stanley Cup series 2-1, and will host game four on Tuesday.
MLB
The Tigers’ four-game winning streak ended with a 4-0 loss to the Mariners on Saturday. Keider Montero took the loss, giving up all four Seattle runs over five innings. Detroit collected just two hits.
The Tigers will host the Mariners again today. Jack Flaherty will start against Luis Castillo. Coverage will begin at 1:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Jacob Misiorowski dominated again, as the Brewers pounded the Rockies 7-1. Misiorowski struck out eight over seven innings, and gave up a run on four hits. Brice Turang, David Hamilton, William Contreras and Jake Bauers homered.
The Brewers visit the Rockies again today. Shane Drohan will pitch against Kyle Freeland.
Reliever Brian Fitzpatrick has been added to Milwaukee’s injured list. He’s been diagnosed with a left UCL strain, and could be facing Tommy John ligament replacement surgery. Drew Rom has been brought up from Nashville to fill in. Milwaukee also added some pitching depth by purchasing the contract of Joel Kuhnel from the Athletics.
