In baseball yesterday…
- The Houghton v Calumet games were canceled because of weather.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell v L’Anse – no report.
- Ewen-Trout Creek fell to Gogebic 22-0. A 15-run third inning ended that game early.
In softball…
- Houghton split their games against Westwood, winning the opener 14-4, and dropping the nightcap 15-5. Ellie Hainault had three hits and two RBI in game one, and struck out eight to earn the win in the circle. Hainault added two more hits and scored twice in game two.
- The Calumet v Negaunee games were canceled because of weather.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell clobbered L’Anse 13-1. Payton Goldsworthy tossed a five-inning no-hitter, and struck out 14. She also had a double and a home run, drove in two runs and scored three times. Megan Sutherland drove in three runs.
- Jeffers dropped two games to Gogebic, 8-6 and 19-1. In the opener, the Jets trailed 8-2 heading into the final inning. Pearl Raffaelli’s two-run double narrowed the gap to two, but Jeffers couldn’t complete the comeback. Meg Ruohonen had a triple and a double. The Miners racked up 15 hits and drew eight walks in the nightcap. Ruohonen and Naomi Frahm each had two hits.
Only three teams completed at the Kingsford Track Invitational yesterday…
- On the boys side, Houghton took the title, followed by Kingsford and West Iron County. Samuel Roth of the Gremlins won the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Michael Solena took the shot put and the discus throw.
- On the girls side, Kingsford claimed a narrow win over Houghton, with West Iron County third. Bristol Shamion of the Wykons won the 200-meter run and the 100 and 300-meter hurdles.

At the Stephenson Lions Club Invitational, the Forest Park boys finished ninth out of 11 teams, and the girls placed fourth out of 13 squads. On the girls side, the Trojans got wins from Audrey Williams in the 1600-meter run, Haven Van Sickle in the 100-meter hurdles, and the 4×400 relay team. See full results here.

- The Thunder shut down the Lakers 108-90 in the opener of that Western Conference semifinal.

- The Knicks host the 76ers. New York leads that Eastern Conference semifinal series 1-0.

NHL
In the NHL playoffs last evening…
- The Avalanche buried the Wild 5-2. Colorado leads that Western Conference second-round series 2-0.
Tonight…
- The Sabres welcome the Canadiens for the opening game of their Eastern Conference second-round set.
- The Golden Knights entertain the Ducks. Vegas has a 1-0 lead in that Western Conference series.
The Maple Leafs won the lottery for the top pick in the upcoming NHL Draft. They’re expected to select Penn State forward Gavin McKenna. The Red Wings’ pick came in at number-15, but that selection belongs to the Blues, as a result of Detroit’s trade deadline deal for defenseman Justin Faulk.
MLB
The Tigers lost to the Red Sox 10-3 last night. Framber Valdez gave up all 10 Boston runs over three innings, allowing nine hits, including three home runs. Matt Vierling homered for Detroit.
The Tigers conclude that home set against the Red Sox tonight. Jack Flaherty will start against Sonny Gray. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Tarik Skubal’s elbow surgery is scheduled for today. Once doctors have cleaned the joint out and reviewed the damage, we’ll get a clearer picture as to how long the Tigers’ ace will be sidelined.
Zack Short’s stay with the Tigers was a short one. After Zach McInstry was reinstated from the injured list yesterday, Short was designated for assignment. He could be assigned to Toledo if he clears waivers.
The Tigers also signed veteran third baseman Paul DeJong to a minor-league contract. He played 57 games with the Nationals last season.
Detroit has fired the manager of their top farm club. A statement from team officials said only that Gabe Alvarez was dismissed because of a violation of club policy. Former Tiger Mike Hessman will take over as interim manager.
The Brewers and Cardinals were rained out last evening. That game will be made up July 7th.
The Brewers conclude that series at Saint Louis this afternoon. Brandon Sproat will pitch against Andre Pallante.
NFL
The Packers have signed veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor to back up Jordan Love this season. Green Bay becomes Taylor’s eighth NFL team.
Former Lions nose tackle DJ Reader has reportedly agreed to a two-year free agent deal with the Giants.
