Michigan Tech’s Isle Royale Wolf-Moose Study recorded numbers for the wolf population and a near-record low moose count during this winter’s research.
Researchers Sarah Hoy and Rolf Peterson led the 2026 Isle Royale Winter Study, conducted between Jan. 22 and March 3. The annual report endured bitterly cold temperatures and strong storms. During the study, an ice bridge formed between the island park and the mainland.
Researchers estimate the wolf population has reached 37 individuals, bringing the island’s population to similar numbers as in the 1970s.
The moose population was estimated at 524 individuals. A dramatic drop in the Isle Royale moose population has been counted since 2010. The park’s lowest population was recorded in 2007 at 385 moose.
