High School
In high school baseball yesterday…
- L’Anse dropped two to Iron Mountain, 4-2 and 13-7. The Purple Hornets collected just two hits in the opener – RBI singles by Daniel Connor and Carson Sanregret. Keegan Davidson had two hits and drove in two runs in the nightcap.
In softball…
- Houghton fell to Kingsford 8-1. The Flivvers scored six runs in the first inning, and held the Gremlins to just three singles.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell swept a doubleheader at Norway, 8-3 and 9-7. Payton Goldsworthy struck out 19 in the first game, and had three hits. Taylor Goldsworthy had a triple, and drove in three runs. Ashlyn Steves and Ella Schneiderhan each had a single and a double. The second game was a seesaw battle, with the Knights taking an early 4-0 lead. The Lakes surged ahead with a five-run fifth inning, but Norway tied it 7-7 with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Taylor Goldsworthy’s two-run homer in the top of the seventh was the game-winner. Steves started the game, and struck out nine. Payton Goldsworthy relieved her in the sixth, and struck out three. She also had four hits.
- Hancock and Jeffers split a doubleheader. The Jets plated four runs in the first inning of the opener, but the Bulldogs came back, and won it 6-5 when Emery Chenoweth doubled home Vada Brooks in the top of the sixth. Lucy Biekkola struck out eight for the win. Kaelyn Rouleau and Alice Larson each had three hits for the Bulldogs, and Chloe Bastian, Vaeda Brooks, Emery Chynoweth and Lucy Biekkola each had two. Janet Mattila had two hits and pitched a complete game for Jeffers. Meg Ruohonen hit a home run. The Jets took the nightcap 12-6. Ellie Kuntze struck out 13 in a complete game win for the Jets. She also had a double, and drove in three runs. Addi Randell had two hits and drove in three runs. Mattila had two hits and drove in two runs.
At the Bobcat Invitational track and field meet at Florence yesterday…
- Forest Park claimed a narrow win in the girls meet, with West Iron County fourth. For the Trojans, Lily Sarder won the long jump and the triple jump. Ava Fischer took the 300-meter hurdles, and placed second in the 100. For the Wykons, Bristol Shamion won the 100-meter dash, and finished second in the 300. She also won the 100-meter hurdles and the high jump.
- Forest Park finished a close second to Norway in the boys meet, with West Iron County fourth. For the Trojans, Dietrich Rasner won the 110 and 300-meter hurdles. Matthew Gasperich win the triple jump. For the Wykons, Saul Kobusson took the 100-meter dash, and placed second in the 200. Seth Oberlin won the 400-meter run and the high jump. Alex Ghigga took the shot put.

College Basketball
Gogebic Community College has a new men’s head basketball coach, and is now looking for a new women’s coach. Denver Sharrow will take over the men’s program. Sharrow joined the program as assistant men’s coach in 2021. He became co-head coach of the women’s team in 2023, and sole head coach in 2024. He replaces Dennis Mackey, who is retiring after 38 years as the men’s coach. The search for a new women’s coach is now underway.
NHL
On the opening night of the playoffs…
- The Blues defeated the Mammoth 5-3.
- The Ducks got past the Predators 5-4.
- The Sharks routed the Jets 6-1.
- The Flames singed the Kings 3-1.
- The Oilers pounded the Canucks 6-1.
- The Avalanche blanked the Kraken 2-0.

NBA
The Play-In tournament wraps up tonight…
- The Magic host the Hornets. The winner gets the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference, and will face the Pistons on Sunday.
- The Suns entertain the Warriors. The winner earns the eighth seed in the Western Conference.
Cade Cunningham will be eligible for the NBA’s post-season awards. Cunningham played in 63 games this season – two shy of the 65-game eligibility minimum. Detroit appealed to the league for an exemption after Cunningham missed 12 games with a collapsed lung, and the league granted it.
MLB
Colt Keith’s single in the bottom of the ninth drove home Riley Greene with the winning run, as the Tigers outlasted Mother Nature and the Royals 10-9 yesterday. In a game that featured two rain delays, Detroit seemed to take control in the fifth inning, scoring four runs, and opening up a 6-1 lead. That evaporated when K.C. plated six runs in the seventh inning against Keider Montero, Drew Anderson and Tyler Holton. The Tigers trailed by two after Connor Seabold gave up a solo homer in the top of the ninth, but Greene doubled home two runs in the bottom of the inning, and scored on Keith’s walk-off single.
The Tigers visit the Red Sox tonight. Casey Mize will start against Ranger Suarez. Coverage will begin at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers shaded the Blue Jays 2-1 yesterday. Garrett Mitchell scored the game-winner in the seventh on a suicide squeeze bunt by Joey Ortiz. Brandon Sproat pitched into the seventh, and gave up a run on four hits.
The Brewers visit the Marlins this evening. Robert Gasser is expected to start against Janson Junk.
