Expanding into the future as a driver in America’s defense industry. Today Great Lakes Sound and Vibration in Calumet celebrated the completion of a 48.5 million and 26,000 Square foot expansion on Friday. The project that was supported by a grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund awarded in 2025, that was apart of a larger 10 million dollar private-public investment in the county’s defense manufacturers. GLSV and Louks Technologies were award Michigan Business Development Program grants that totaled $700,000 between the two companies.
“We’re very grateful for the support from the community. You can see it in the attendance we have here today. Getting the legislators here. And we appreciate the chance to play a role in the growth of the community,” said Mattson
Over the next five years GLSV will add another 32 employees and bring the team up to 100 full time workers in the copper country.
“The expansion behind us, area for working, gives us a lot of additional square footage underneath a heavier duty crane with more capacity to lift and more height to lift,” said CEO of GLSV Steven Mattson. “So, our ability to do projects for the navy, for instance, large projects, large hardware, and capacity has increased almost an order of magnitude for us. Our ability to do more work faster. Help solve the nation’s challenges in building ships.”
Great lakes sound and vibration create solutions to insulate sound coming from the navy’s ship engines. The company has also supplied the United States military with parts used in manufacturing of Humvees and tanks.
The Keweenaw Peninsula is home to a growing technology and manufacturing sector that works closely with branches in the military. Along with the $400,000 grant GLSV recieved in 2025, Loukus Technologies received 300,000 dollars. Mattson thanked several organizations and individuals for their assistance in completing the expansion, reserving special recognition for his employees who keep the ship running smoothly.
