High School
The Houghton High School hockey team is heading to the Division Three state championship game, after defeating the Traverse City St. Francis Bay Reps 4-0 yesterday afternoon. Connor Arko scored the eventual game-winner late in the first period – the first of two goals. Gunner Gullstrand and Jake Mattson also scored. Cooper Flachs got the win in net, as Houghton outshot the Reps 37-16. The state title game will begin this afternoon at 3:00. In girls district basketball finals last night…
- In Division Four, Ewen-Trout Creek dispatched Wakefield-Marenisco 57-29 to win the District 97 crown. L’Anse outscored Baraga 61-56 to take the District 98 title. The Panthers and Purple Hornets will meet in a regional semifinal Monday at 7:00 at Houghton High School.
- Calumet claimed the Division Three, District 65 title with a tense 38-35 win over Westwood. The Copper Kings were up 19-18 at halftime, thanks to a Bailey Strom three-point buzzer-beater. Trailing by one with six seconds left in the game, the Patriots had a chance to take the lead, but their in-bound pass was tipped and stolen by Kiirsi Johnson. Johnson was fouled with 1.5 seconds remaining, and sank both of her free throws to seal the win. Bailey Strom led Calumet with 11 points, and Kyla Strom added nine. Eliisa Doney scored 13 for Westwood. The Copper Kings will face Menominee in a regional semifinal Monday night at 7:00 at Negaunee. Coverage will begin around 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. The Maroons defeated Gwinn 59-40 in their district final.
Junior Hockey
At the 18U Tier III junior hockey state tournament at the Colosseum yesterday…
- Ontonagon’s Fighting Miners defeated the local Jim’s Pizza squad 5-3. The Miners broke open a tie game with two goals in the third period.
- The Lansing Spartans overpowered the Howell Cougars 9-3.

- The Fighting Miners play the Cougars at 10:00.

College Hockey
The 20th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team claimed a 5-3 victory in the opening game of their Central Collegiate Hockey Association tournament series against Bowling Green last night. Owen Bartoszkiewicz made 36 saves as the Falcons outshot the Huskies 39-18. Goals by Carson Bernie, Elias Jansson, Noah Reinhart and Teydon Trembecky gave the Huskies a 4-2 lead in the third period. A late Falcons goal narrowed the gap, but Isaac Gordon’s empty-netter sealed the victory.
Game two of the best-of-three series will be played tonight at 6:07 at the SDC. If needed, game three will be played tomorrow at 5:07.
Northern Michigan University did not make the playoffs.
College Basketball
The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference basketball tournament wraps up this weekend.
On the women’s side, Northern Michigan will face top-seed Grand Valley in a semifinal game today at 2:00 in Allendale. Ferris State and Wayne State will play in the other semifinal.
Northern Michigan will host the men’s side. The top-seeded Wildcats will face fourth-seed Lake Superior State today at 2:00. Second-seed Michigan Tech will play third-seed Grand Valley at 4:30.
GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers concluded their regular season with a 5-3 victory over the Mosinee Papermakers last night.
The Calumet Wolverines welcome the Papermakers tonight at 7:30 at the Colosseum.
NHL
The Red Wings dropped a 3-1 decision to the Panthers last night. Alex DeBrincat scored Detroit’s only goal. John Gibson returned from his shoulder injury and made 20 saves.
The Wings have lost seven of their last 10 games, and visit the Devils tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
At the trade deadline yesterday, the Wings picked up veteran defenseman Justin Faulk from the Blues. Saint Louis gets defenseman Justin Holl, 22-year-old Russian prospect Dmitri Buchelnikov, Detroit’s first pick in the 2026 draft, and a 2026 third-round pick that Detroit had gotten from the Sharks.
They also sent forward Elmer Soderblom to the Penguins in exchange for a 2026 third-round draft pick.
NBA
The Pistons welcome the Nets tonight. Coverage will begin at 5:35 on 99.3 the Lift.
The Bucks entertain the Jazz this evening.
MLB
The Tigers walloped the Red Sox 11-3 yesterday in a Grapefruit League game. In his first start of the spring, Justin Verlander gave up a two-run homer over two innings. Matt Vierling had three hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs for Detroit. Jace Jung had three hits and drove in three runs.
The Tigers face the Pirates this afternoon. Casey Mize will start for Detroit.
The Brewers shut down the Diamondbacks 6-2 in Cactus League play yesterday. Chad Patrick gave up two runs on five hits over three innings.
The Brewers face the Angels today. Brandon Woodruff will make his first start of the spring.
NFL
Taylor Decker will not play for the Lions next season. Decker had two seasons remaining on his contract, but the team apparently wanted him to take a pay cut. He asked for his release to look elsewhere, and management agreed.
