SEMCO is reminding natural gas users of safety measures that should be taken following the recent heavy snowfall.
Keep your natural gas pressure regulator and meter free from snow and ice cover. Brush snow away with something soft, such as a broom – don’t use hard implements such as shovels or spuds, and don’t use de-icer. If you can’t break the ice free easily, call your gas provider for help.
Make sure exhaust and fresh air intake vents for high-efficiency gas furnaces and water heaters aren’t blocked. That can cause a build-up of deadly carbon monoxide. It’s also a good time to check the battery in your carbon monoxide detector – or install a new detector if you don’t have one, or if yours is aging.
When shoveling or blowing snow, take care not to pile that snow up around your meter or appliance vents.
