Ontonagon County sheriff responds to a fatal head-on car crash Saturday on m-28. At 1:30 pm the Ontonagon County Sheriff responded to assist Michigan State Police on the scene of a head-on two-car collision on M –28 near Timberline rentals in Bergland township. An initial investigation by officials revealed that a Minnesota couple traveling west on M-28 struck a vehicle, that was traveling eastbound and was attempting to make a left turn off the highway.
The vehicle driven by the couple attempted to avoid the crash with the vehicle driven by an 81-year-old Wakefield man. The Wakefield man was transported to Aspirus Ironwood Hospital for injuries sustained in the collision and later passed away.
The Wakefield man’s vehicle hit a second vehicle with a 63-year-old Minnesota woman, who was in the car as a passenger. She was transported to a nearby hospital and air-lifted to a second location.
The 61-year-old man driving the car with the Minnesota couple sustained minor injuries and was able to seek medical treatment.
The Ontonagon County sheriff’s investigation into the incident remains under investigation.
