Laurium fire fighters work to control a fire at the village’s department of public works garage.
A fire broke out early this morning, around 3:30 am, at the Laurium Department of Public Works garage on 7th street. Near the Goerge Gipp recreation area and ice arena.
Village of Calumet Fire and Calumet Township Fire Department fire fighters assisted the Laurium Fire Department to control the blaze. Crews were able to control the fire by mid morning. Heavy smoke could still be seen coming from the building around 8:30 am. The building’s roof appears to have suffered significant damage.
The DPW garage houses Laurium DPW vehicles and heavy equipment.
An official report from the Lauirum Police Department has not been released at this time. We hope to update the community with more information at a later time.
