The United States Federal highway Administration awards MDOT a portion of 135 million dollars in grant funds to support wildlife crossings on major highways.
On Monday the Michigan Department of Transportation announced it has been awarded 467,000 dollars to fund the analysis and streamline efforts to improve motorists’ safety by reducing wildlife-vehicle collisions. Michigan Ranks fourth in the country for the highest number of deer-vehicle crashes annually. The more than 50,000 accidents per year account for 130 million dollars in damages. The state also accounts for other wildlife-vehicle accidents with animals like moose, turkey, elk, and bears most often.
