Temperatures may be dropping, but fresh produce and artisan bread continue to flourish at the From the Ground Farmer’s Market Collective’s cool season market.
The collective hosted its first cool season market of 2026 over the weekend at the Drill Shop in Calumet, extending the market season and connecting farmers with customers seeking nutritious food.
“Even though there’s frost outside some mornings, a number of our farmers have hoop houses and greenhouses where they are able to extend their growing season,” said Rebecca Matuszak, executive director of From the Ground Farmer’s Market Collective. “For the community, we administer seven different food access programs. And so we help by administering the programs. We give folks tokens so that they can actually spend them with the farmers. And then we reimburse the farmers.”
The collective dedicates approximately seven hours each week to reimbursing farmers, ensuring local growers receive payment for feeding the community.
The cool season market operates Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Drill Shop, located behind the Calumet Colosseum, through November 21. The market accepts WIC, HUSKY, and other food assistance programs.
