High School
In the high school football last night…
- Houghton got past Gladstone 12-7.
- Calumet fell at Escanaba 21-20. The Eskymoes scored on the game’s opening drive. The Copper Kings tied the game a few minutes later with a six-yard Tyler Halonen run, then took the lead when Halonen returned an interception for a score on Esky’s next possession. A nine-yard Trent Anderson run boosted the Kings’ lead to 20-7, but the Eskymoes added a touchdown just before halftime to narrow the gap to 20-14. Calumet opened the second half with a 14-play drive that took nearly nine minutes off the clock, but ended in the Escanaba red zone when a fourth-down conversion attempt fell six inches short. Owen Peterson intercepted an Esky pass, but the Kings couldn’t get a first down. Their punt backed Escanaba up to their own five-yard line, but a 61-yard gain on their first play set up an eventual six-yard scoring pass, and the extra point kick gave the Eskymoes the lead with four minutes remaining. Calumet drove to the Eskymoes’ 20-yard line, but a last-gasp pass fell incomplete at the goal line. Hear the game replay here.
