The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office has released details about a standoff that began early Tuesday morning at a residence on W Pine Street.
At approximately 4:45 a.m., sheriff deputies were dispatched to 25319 W Pine Street in response to a report of a fire in the roadway with nails intentionally scattered across the road.
Upon arrival, deputies attempted to make contact with a resident inside the home. The individual locked himself in the garage and refused deputies’ commands. The suspect exited the residence at one point carrying a knife before re-entering while continuing to refuse commands. During the incident, the suspect was observed pointing a firearm at a deputy.
Law enforcement secured a perimeter around the residence from 10th Street to 1st Street, and from Cone Street to Pine Street/M-203. An arrest and search warrant was obtained, and the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team was activated to assist.
While serving the warrant, the suspect exited the house and threw knives at the Emergency Support Team before retreating back inside. After a short time, the suspect exited the residence and was taken into custody without further incident.
No charges have been announced at this time as the investigation continues. The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Michigan State Police, the MSP Emergency Support Team, Keweenaw County Sheriff, Laurium Police Department, detectives with the UPSET West team, the Houghton County Road Commission, MDOT, Mercy Ambulance, and Calumet Fire.

A Houghton County man was taken into custody following a significant law enforcement response in Calumet Township on Tuesday.
The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office requested the community avoid the area of M-203/Pine Street and 11th Street beginning around 6:30 a.m. due to an incident involving a large police presence.
Between 8 a.m. and noon, multiple Michigan State Police units arrived at the scene, including a K-9 unit and an armored vehicle equipped with a battering ram. Several officers were seen wearing body armor and carrying rifles.
Police moved onto the Calumet Township property and breached the residence through two windows and the garage. A man exited the building and was taken into custody without incident.
The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office investigation remains ongoing. Additional details are expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
