The Hancock City Council and Hancock Public Schools Board of Education will hold a special joint meeting Friday at noon to establish a new district library in the Copper Country.
The city and school board aim to create a new agreement and library board of directors. Before asking voters to consider a library millage in November.
City Manager Mary Babcock said the collaboration involves multiple moving parts, including gaining approval from the Michigan State Librarian.
“We’ll both kind of run simultaneous meetings and discuss the agreement,” Babcock said. “And the resolution will be on the table to get approved to create the library and appoint members of the board. That board then, if all goes well, will have a meeting immediately following to approve the ballot language. So it would be an opportunity for the general public to show their support if they’re interested in this going on the ballot.”
The meeting will include an opportunity for the public to voice support or concerns about the new district library. If approved, voters will see a millage proposal on November 2026 ballots.
The special joint meeting between the City of Hancock and Hancock Public Schools will begin at noon at Hancock Central High School in the school board meeting room. Find the agenda here.
