The Environmental Protection Agency announced Wednesday it will award a $1.5 million grant to Keweenaw Bay Indian Community as part of the Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling program.
KBIC plans to use the funds to support rehabilitating the tribe’s solid waste facility to expand recycling opportunities and will create a fish composting program.
“The SWIFR investment will help Keweenaw Bay Indian Community expand convenient recycling and composting, keeping hazardous materials out of landfills and waterways,” said EPA Regional Administrator Anne Vogel.
The project expects to divert more than 49,000 pounds of fish compost annually and nearly 4,000 pounds of waste. Those interested in learning more about the award can find details online.
