MLB
The Tigers snapped their three-game losing streak by crushing the Orioles 14-0 last night. Just called back up from Toledo to fill in for the injured Kerry Carpenter, Eduardo Valencia blasted two homers and drove in four runs. Gleyber Torres had a home run and a double, and plated five runs. Troy Melton scattered three hits over seven innings.
The Tigers host the Orioles again this afternoon. Tarik Skubal will start against Trevor Rogers. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
This could be Skubal’s last start for the Tigers. The MLB trade deadline is Monday. He becomes a free agent at the end of the season, and Detroit is unlikely to be able to afford to re-sign him. Skubal has expressed a desire to stay with Detroit to the end of this season, but team management may look to trade him.
Javier Báez returned from the injured list, and had three hits in last night’s game. To make room on the roster, catcher Jake Rogers was designated for assignment.
The Brewers clubbed the Giants 8-2. Brice Turang had three of Milwaukee’s 13 hits, and drove in two runs. Logan Henderson pitched into the sixth, and allowed no runs on just two hits.
The Brewers visit the Giants again this afternoon. Shane Drohan will pitch against Logan Webb.
First baseman Jake Bauers missed last night’s game after he fouled a ball off his foot Monday. An X-ray revealed a broken big toe, which Bauers had apparently been playing over for some time. The foul ball aggravated it, and he and the team are exploring options.
NFL
The Packers will have a new placekicker this season. Green Bay released veteran Brandon McManus earlier this year. They have also parted company with Lucas Havrisik, who set a Packers franchise record with a 61-yard field goal last season. The Pack drafted Trey Smack out of the University of Florida this spring. They’ve also signed German kicker Lenny Krieg to compete for the job.
