As expected, the Maple Leafs opened the NHL Draft last night by selecting Penn State forward Gavin McKenna. The Sharks followed by taking Swedish forward Ivar Stenberg.
The Red Wings opened the day without a first-round pick, but gained one by trading goalie Sebastian Cossa to the Mammoth in return for the 23rd selection. They used that to take forward J.P. Hurlbert, who led the Western Hockey League with 42 goals and 55 assists in 68 games for Kamloops last season. He’ll join the University of Michigan hockey team this fall.
Rounds two through seven will take place today. Detroit will have seven picks, beginning with number-47 overall in the second round.
MLB
The Tigers broke their three-game losing streak with an 8-0 win over the Astros last night. Keider Montero allowed five hits over seven shutout innings. Kerry Carpenter, Colt Keith and James Outman homered.
The Tigers host the Astros again today. Framber Valdez will start against Kai-Wei Teng. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit has claimed 25-year-old pitcher Yilber Díaz off waivers from the Diamondbacks, and assigned him to Toledo. To make room on the 40-man roster, Wenceel Pérez was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
The Brewers clobbered the Cubs 6-2. Jacob Misiorowski gave up a run on two hits over six innings, and hit 105.5 miles per hour on his third pitch – the third-fastest pitch recorded in the Statcast era. Garrett Mitchell and William Contreras homered for Milwaukee.
The Brewers welcome the Cubs again tonight. Kyle Harrison will pitch against David Peterson.
Milwaukee has brought pitcher Jared Koenig off the injured list, and demoted Craig Yoho back to Nashville.
