The Houghton County Veterans Service Office brings together its annual Vet Fest for the fourth year tomorrow. The event provides veterans from across the Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin a single stop to connect with local resources.
The event opens at 11 a.m. at Michigan Tech’s Student Development Complex. More than 850 veterans are expected to attend, with access to more than 90 organizations serving the veteran community, a pasty lunch and local health care programs.
The VA will offer on-the-spot health care enrollments and toxic exposure screenings at the event, according to Houghton County VSO Director Joe Battisfore.
“With the VA, they’ll be doing on-the-spot health care enrollments that would require or help to have a toxic exposure screening,” Battisfore said. “They’ll have a doctor available and a private area where they can interview the veteran and determine what toxic exposures the veteran may have encountered. There’s going to be the Michigan Secretary of State there, so if you have any business with the secretary of state, you can get that handled — no waiting. There’s just a wealth of information.”
The first 500 veterans in attendance will receive a $20 gas gift card. More information is available online . The resource fair will begin at 11 a.m., Wednesday June 17th. The student development complex is located at 600 MacInnes Drive, Houghton, MI 49931.
