A long-time Michigan Tech campus landmark is about to become history.
Tech Today reports that demolition of the Hamar House is scheduled to begin within the next few days.
Offices housed in the former home have been relocated, and environmental abatement work has been completed.
The move is the first step in revamping university parking, in anticipation of the construction of the new Chang K. Park Center for Student Wellness, which will be located in the center of the campus.
The Park Center is scheduled to be completed by the fall of 2028.
As work begins, Lot 14 near the Hamar House will be closed. Eventually, it will be expanded to accommodate 53 additional parking spaces.
That’s one of a slew of parking changes coming to the Tech campus.
A number of parking changes on campus are set to begin taking effect July 1st.
Several lots will be redesignated for Red Permit faculty and staff parking, including:
Lot 5, between the Rozsa Center and East Hall, which was formerly a commuter lot;
Lot 27, southeast of the Administration Building, which was formerly a visitor lot;
Lot 14, between Fisher Hall and Walker Lawn.
Lot 12, south of the Memorial Union Building and the library, which was formerly a faculty/staff lot, will now be a metered lot to accommodate losses of other metered spaces around campus.
The west half of Lot 1, near the Administration Building, will become a Black Permit faculty and staff lot. That will help fill the gap created by the loss of Lot 11, where the new Park Center will be located.
Lot 26, west of the Noblet Forest Resources Building, which was formerly a commuter lot, will become residential lots for students with Blue parking permits.
Former residential parking spaces in Lot 17, south of Wadsworth Hall, in Lot 24, west of the Gates Tennis Center, and in Lot 10E, at the east end of campus, will now be commuter spaces for holders of Green parking permits.
The following lots will become commuter lots for holders of Green parking permits:
Lot 10E, at the east end of campus, which was formerly a residential lot;
Lot 17L, south of Wadsworth Hall, which was formerly a residential lot;
Lot 24, west of Gates Tennis Center, of which 192 spaces were formerly residential.
Former commuter parking spaces in Lot 5, between the Rozsa Center and East Hall, will now be faculty and staff spaces for holders of Red permits.
Officials say the changes will create 26 additional commuter parking spaces for holders of Green permits.
Green parking permit holders who park in Lot 24 can take advantage of the university’s shuttle service, which will be adding a stop near the entrance to the Gates Tennis Center.
Lot 34, located on Phoenix Drive, will remain available to support guaranteed commuters with Purple parking permits.
Former commuter parking spaces in Lot 5, between the Rozsa Center and East Hall, will now be faculty and staff spaces for holders of Red parking permits.
Metered parking for access to many of the university’s academic, administrative and event destinations is now available in Lot 12, with payment available via mobile devices.
