High School
Jeffers and Hancock both advanced to baseball district regional finals, after semifinal victories yesterday.
The Jets eliminated North Dickinson 10-5, sealing the win with a five-run fifth inning. Levi Kinnunen and Redick Randell each had three hits for Jeffers. Cam Anderson added two hits, and earned the complete-game win on the mound, allowing nine hits and striking out eight.
Jeffers will face Mio in the regional final Saturday morning at 10:00 at Rudyard. Norway and Hillman will also play in regional final at Rudyard at 12:30, and the winners will meet in a quarterfinal game at 3:00.
Braydon Larson singled home the winning run in the top of the seventh, as the Bulldogs bested Menominee 3-2. The game was scoreless through the first five innings. Hancock scored one run in the top of the sixth, and the Maroons responded wth two in the bottom of the inning. Caleb Isaacson’s bases-loaded walk in the top of the seventh tied the game. Each team was held to just four hits. Ben Keranen went the distance for Hancock, striking out four.
The Bulldogs will face Manistee in a regional final Saturday at 10:00 at Gladstone. Traverse City St, Frances will play Sanford Meridian in the other regional final at 12:30. The winners will face off in a quarterfinal match at 3:00.
NBA
The Knicks got past the Spurs 105-95 in the opening game of the NBA championship series last night.
Game two will be played in San Antonio tomorrow night.
NHL
The Hurricanes host the Golden Knights in game two of the Stanley Cup final tonight.
MLB
The Tigers completed a sweep of the Rays with a 7-2 victory yesterday. Troy Melton gave up single runs in the first and second innings. He settled in and completed eight frames, allowing just four hits and striking out five. Jake Rogers and Dillon Dingler homered.
The Tigers have today off, and entertain the Mariners tomorrow night. Framber Valdez will start against Bryan Woo. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers dropped a tight 1-0 decision to the Giants last evening. Victor Bericoto’s homer off Robert Gasser in the fifth inning provided the game’s only run. Gasser took the tough loss. Milwaukee was held to just three hits.
The Brewers wrap up that set against the Giants this afternoon. Coleman Crow will pitch against former Brewer Adrian Houser.
Rob Zastryzny’s return from the injured list was short-lived. After he was activated Sunday, he felt discomfort during a pregame throwing session. A scan revealed a trapezoid strain, and he’s back on the list. Gasser, who started last night’s game, fills the gap.
Twilight League
The Copper Country Twilight League baseball season opens tonight.
- Houghton Building Supply will face Garnet Garage at the Houghton field.
- Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker will take on Northern Driveline at the Stanton field.
NFL
Packers pass rusher Micah Parsons will not be available to start the upcoming NFL season. In addition to the ACL surgery that sidelined him for most of last season, he now says he also had a meniscus procedure, which will keep him on the sideline until mid-October at the earliest.
