In baseball yesterday…
- Lake Linden-Hubbell v Ewen-Trout Creek – no report.
In softball…
- Houghton pounded Gwinn 19-0 and 22-3. Before the opener ended by mercy rule midway through the third inning, the Gremlins had collected 16 hits, including two home runs by Ellie Hainault. She drove in four runs, as did Lexi Burns, who had three hits. Hainault gave up one hit to earn the win, and struck out seven of the 10 batters she faced. Houghton opened the nightcap by scoring 18 runs in the first inning. That game also ended midway through the third because of the mercy rule. The Gremlins amassed 15 hits, and took advantage of eight walks. Romi Mattson had three hits, drove in four runs, and earned the win in the circle.
- Hancock couldn’t hold an early lead, and fell to Negaunee 12-5. All five of the Bulldogs’ runs came in the first inning, powered by a two-run triple by Kaelyn Rouleau.

The Forest Park girls won the team title at the Skyline Conference meet at North Dickinson yesterday. The Trojan boys finished fourth.
- On the girls side, Audrey Williams won the 1600-meter run, and Ava Fischer took both hurdles events and the pole vault. The 4×400 relay team won.

College Basketball
A veteran basketball coach will take over the women’s program at Gogebic Community College.
Ward Helakoski has been named head coach. Helakoski most recently served as an assistant coach for the Michigan Tech women’s team. Before that, he coached the Hancock girls basketball team. He’s also coached at several other Michigan schools, including Forest Park, and has also worked in Wisconsin, Louisiana and Pennsylvania.
As head coach at the Community College of Allegheny County in Pittsburgh, his team qualified for two National Junior College Athletic Association tournaments and advanced to one Sweet Sixteen appearance.
He takes over for Denver Sharrow, who became the head coach of the Gogebic men’s team following the retirement of Dennis Mackey.
NBA
The Knicks opened the Eastern Conference finals with a 115-104 overtime victory over the Cavaliers.
The Thunder host the Spurs for game two of the Western Conference finals tonight. San Antonio won the opener.
NHL
The NHL Western Conference finals open tonight, as the Avalanche host the Golden Knights.
MLB
Brayan Rocchio’s infield groundout off Tyler Holton drove in the winning run, as the Guardians shaded the Tigers 4-3 last night. Spencer Torkelson hit a two-run homer for Detroit. Keider Montero gaave up three runs over five innings.
The Tigers have lost 12 of their last 14 games, and host the Guardians again tonight. Detroit has not named a starter. Tanner Bibee will open for Cleveland. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Jacob Misiorowski sparkled again, as the Brewers dumped the Cubs 5-2. Misiorowski gave up just three hits over six shutout innings, and struck out eight. Brice Turang hit a two-run homer.
The Brewers visit the Cubs again tonight. Kyle Harrison will pitch against Edward Cabrera.
