High School
In high school baseball yesterday…
- Lake Linden-Hubbell lost two to Gogebic, 18-0 and 18-1.
- L’Anse fell twice to Ironwood, 16-6 and 6-4. Kale Cichosz and Carson Sanregret each had two hits for the Purple Hornets in the opener. Daniel Connor had a double in the opener, and a triple in the nightcap.
- Ontonagon clobbered Ewen-Trout Creek 22-0.
In softball…
- Lake Linden-Hubbell remained unbeaten with two 9-8 walkoff victories over Gogebic. The Lakes overcame an early four-run deficit in the opener, and claimed the win when Ashlyn Steves singled home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Payton Goldsworthy gave up eight runs on 10 hits, but also struck out 19 Miners. Goldsworthy’s three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh gave Lake Linden another come-from-behind win. It was her second home run of the game. Steves earned the win in the circle.
- L’Anse split their games at Ironwood. The Red Devils claimed the opener 23-20. The Purple Hornets took an early lead by scoring nine runs in the top of the second, only to see Ironwood plate 18 in the bottom of the inning. Lola Cichosz had three hits for L’Anse. The Purple Hornets came back to claim the nightcap 24-14. Kwynn Voskuhl had five hits, including a homer, and drove in five runs. Cochosz had three hits, including a homer, and drove in five.
- Ontonagon swept Baraga 16-11 and 21-12. Irelynd McGeshick had five hits for the Gladiators in game one, scored four times, and drove in three. She added three more hits in game two, three runs scored and two RBI. Ari Jahfetson had four hits, including a homer, for the Vikings, drove in four runs and scored four times.
- Forest Park v Superior Central – no report.
At the Negaunee Lions Track Invitational yesterday…
- Marquette won the boys competition, with Houghton third and Forest Park 10th. Sam Roth of the Gremlins won the 100-meter dash, and Michael Solena took the shot put and the discus throw.
- Negaunee took the girls title, with Forest Park fourth and Houghton fifth. Ava Fischer from the Trojans won the shot put.

In the NHL playoffs…
- The Canadiens buried the Sabres 5-1. That Eastern Conference semifinal series is tied 1-1.
- The Golden Knights sank the Ducks 6-2. Vegas leads that Western Conference series 2-1.
Tonight…
- The Hurricanes visit the Flyers. Carolina holds a 3-0 lead in that Eastern Conference series.
- The Wild welcome the Avalanche. Colorado is up 2-0 in that Western Conference set.
MLB
The Tigers couldn’t hold a late lead, and fell to the Royals 4-3 last evening. Keider Montero tossed six strong innings, giving up a run on three hits. He left with a 3-1 lead, thanks to sixth-inning RBI doubles by Wenceel Pérez and Spencer Torkelson. Kansas City scored two off Kyle Finnegan in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game, and Kyle Isbel’s RBI single off Brant Hurter in the bottom of the ninth closed out the scoring.
The Tigers have dropped four straight, and will play in Kansas City again tonight. Burch Smith is expected to open a bullpen game for the Tigers. Michael Wacha will counter for the Phillies. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit re-signed infielder Zack Short to a major league contract yesterday. Infielder Jace Jung was returned to Toledo. Detroit also signed journeyman pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. to a minor league contract. He had become a fre agent after having been designated for assignment by the Mets earlier this week.
The Brewers blanked the Yankees 6-0 last night. Jacob Misiorowski’s fastball topped 103 miles per hour, as he struck out 11 Bronx Bombers over six innings, while allowing just two hits. Brandon Lockridge had two hits and drove in two runs, but left the game in the fourth inning after slamming his knee into a concrete wall in the outfield. The initial exam revealed a gash so deep it cut to the bone. Follow-up tests will have to wait until the swelling subsides.
The Brewers host the Yankees again this evening. Kyle Harrison will pitch against Cam Schlittler.
Milwaukee outfielder Greg Jones cleared waivers yesterday, and was assigned to the Sounds.
NFL
The Packers have released kicker Brandon McManus, after an inconsistent season last year. Green Bay drafted Florida kicker Trey Smack in the sixth round of the recent NFL Draft.
