High School
In baseball yesterday…
- Calumet outscored Houghton 8-3. The Copper Kings scored all eight of their runs in the top of the fourth inning, on just four hits, along with three Gremlins errors and a passed ball. Tyler Halonen had two hits for the Kings. Nate Londo had a double and scored twice. Brycyn Nettel and Brody Donnelly each had two hits for Houghton.
- Hancock and Westwood split a doubleheader. The Bulldogs won the opener 1-0. Ben Keranen struck out 14 and allowed just one hit. He also scored the game’s only run, singling in the third inning, advancing from first to third on an error, and coming home on a single by Isaac Wanhala. The Patriots took the nightcap 7-3. The Patriots broke open a close game with four runs in the top of the sixth.
In softball…
- Calumet swept Ironwood 13-6 and 16-0. In game one, Bethany Garrow had three hits, including a home run, and scored three times for the Copper Kings. She also got the win in the circle, surviving a Red Devils’ grand slam in the second inning, and striking out 15. Chloe Coppe homered and drove in three runs. Game two ended after three innings. Jailyn Poshak allowed just one hit to get the win. Molly Erkkila had three hits, scored three times, and drove in two.
At the Houghton County Invitational track meet yesterday…
- Houghton won the boys side. Lake Linden-Hubbell finished second, followed by Calumet, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Hancock, the Copper Island Academy and Chassell. Michael Solena of the Gremlins won the shot put and the discus throw. Lukas Axford of the Lakes took the 800 and 1600-meter runs.
- Calumet took the women’s crown, followed by Lake Linden-Hubbell, Houghton, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Hancock, Chassell, Jeffers and the Copper Country Christian School. Alexa Hoffman of the Copper Kings won the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Jordan Holombo of the Panthers took the 100 and 300-meter hurdles.

At the Macy Bracket Invitational at Bessemer, team results were not posted.
- On the boys side, Eduel Spencer from West Iron County won the 800 and 1600-meter runs, and Seth Oberlin took the 400 and the high jump. Alex Ghigga claimed the shot put. Connor Kemppainen from L’Anse won the 300-meter hurdles, and Tavin Lewis won the discus throw.
- On the girls side, Bristol Shamion from West Iron County took the 100 and 300-meter hurdles. Violet Amos from Ontonagon won the 200 and 400-meter sprints. L’Anse’s Breyelle Bowers won the long jump. Elisa Delene from Baraga claimed the discus throw and the pole vault.

- The Thunder bombed the Lakers 125-107. Oklahoma City leads that Western Conference series 2-0.

- The Knicks visit the 76ers. New York leads that Eastern Conference semifinal 2-0.

NHL
In the NHL playoffs…
- The Hurricanes blew away the Flyers 4-1. Carolina takes a 3-0 lead in that Eastern Conference second-round series.

- The Sabres host the Canadiens. Buffalo leads that Eastern Conference series 1-0.
- The Ducks welcome the Golden Knights. That Western Conference set is tied 1-1.
MLB
The Tigers had yesterday off, and open a series at Kansas City tonight. Keider Montero will start against Kris Bubic. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Pitcher Grant Holman is no longer with the Tigers. He was claimed off waivers by the Phillies, after having been designated for assignment. Pitcher Yoniel Curet and infielder Zack Short have cleared waivers and been assigned to Toledo.
The Brewers also had yesterday off, and host the Yankees this evening. Jacob Misiorowski will pitch against Max Fried.
