High School
In high school baseball yesterday:
- Hancock took two from Calumet, 5-4 and 2-0. Ben Keranen’s single in the bottom of the seventh inning drove in the winning run in the opening game. The Bulldogs had built an early 4-0 lead, but the Copper Kings scored three in the fifth, with help from a two-run single by Oskar Loukus. They tied the game when Darin Berg singled home Luke Hamlin in the sixth. Keranen struck out 10 to earn the win for Hancock. Nate Thompson gave up just three hits and struck out seven for the complete game win in the nightcap. Luciano Paoli had two of the Bulldogs’ three hits.
- Jeffers v Ontonagon – no report.
- L’Anse split its doubleheader against Gogebic. The Miners win the opener 17-7. Ian Mattila had six hits and drove in five runs for the Miners. Carson Sanregret drove in four runs for the Purple Hornets. L’Anse came back to take the nightcap 6-2.
In softball…
- Calumet swept Gwinn, 19-1 and 17-2. Bethany Garrow had a home run and a triple in the opener, and drove in four runs. Jailyn Poshak also homered, and drove in four. Danni Stites gave up one hit to earn the win in the circle for the Copper Kings in a game which ended after three innings because of the mercy rule. The nightcap ended after four innings. Garrow hit for the cycle, drove in four runs, and scored four times. Chloe Coppe had three hits, and drove in four runs. Jailyn Poshak struck out nine to get the win.
- Hancock dropped two games to Kingsford, 9-0 and 16-4. The Bulldogs were held to just two hits in the opener. Kaelyn Rouleau had two hits and drove in two runs for Hancock in the nightcap.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell took two from Baraga, 19-0 and 16-3. Payton Goldsworthy hit for the cycle in game one, winding up with five hits, six RBI, and five runs scored. She also struck out 11 to get the five-inning win in the circle. Taylor Goldsworthy had three hits, four RBI, and three runs scored. Kiara Mills had two hits and drove in four runs in game two. Payton Goldsworthy had three hits, drove in three, and scored four times. Ashlyn Steves struck out six to earn the five-inning win.
- L’Anse fell twice to Gogebic, 12-2 and 17-1. The Purple Hornets were held to just four hits in the opener, and none in the nightcap.
- Ontonagon v Iron Mountain – no report.
At the Eskymoes Invitational in Escanaba yesterday…
- The Houghton boys finished second to Sault Ste. Marie. West Iron County placed sixth. Brandon Van Karsen of the Gremlins won the 3200-meter run, Michael Solena took the shot put and the discus throw, and the 4×800 relay team finished first.
- The Houghton girls placed third, behind Marquette and Gladstone. West Iron County finished sixth. Tessa Rautiola won the 1600 and 3200-meter runs for the Gremlins, and the 4×400 relay team came in first. Bristol Shamion took the 100 and 300-meter hurdles and the high jump for the Wykons.

In the NBA tournament last night…
- The Pistons overcame a 24-point deficit, and stunned the Magic 93-79 last night. Detroit held Orlando to just 19 points in the second half. Cade Cunningham had 32 points and 10 rebounds. That series is now tied 3-3, and will be decided tomorrow in Detroit. Coverage will begin at 3:05 on 99.3 The Lift.
- The Raptors shaded the Cavaliers 112-110 in overtime. That series is tied 3-3.
- The Lakers dispatched the Rockets 98-78. Los Angeles wins that series 4-2.
Tonight…
- The Celtics host the 76ers. That series is tied 3-3.
NHL
In the NHL playoffs last night…
- The Lightning edged the Canadiens 1-0 in overtime. That series is tied 3-3.
- The Sabres dumped the Bruins 4-1. Buffalo wins that set 4-2.
- The Golden Knights outskated the mammoth 5-1. Vegas wins that series 4-2.
Tonight…
- Round two begins, as the Hurricanes host the Flyers.
MLB
Alejandro Osuna’s RBI double off Burch Smith in the top of the eighth gave the Rangers a 5-4 victory over the Tigers last night. Jack Flaherty’s struggles continued – he gave up four runs before leaving in the fourth inning. Riley Greene had two hits for Detroit.
The Tigers continue that home set against the Rangers tonight. Keider Montero will start against Kumar Rocker. Coverage will begin at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
Infielder Zack Short is back with the Tigers. Short appeared in 112 games for Detroit in the 2023 season, before moving on. The Tigers purchased his contract from the National yesterday, and assigned him to Toledo.
The Brewers shut down the Nationals 6-1. Jacob Misiorowski took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, when he was forced out of the game because of a cramp. William Contreras had four hits and drove in three runs for Milwaukee.
Misiorowski will be examined today, but team officials are hoping it was just a transient problem. Brandon Woodruff has been placed on the injured list, after an early exit from Thursday’s start. An MRI revealed shoulder inflammation, but no structural damage. He’ll likely miss at least a couple of weeks. Easton McGee was called up from Nashville to fill in.
The Brewers visit the Nationals again this afternoon. Kyle Harrison will pitch against Foster Griffin.
