High School
The track and field season opened yesterday with the Keweenaw Classic indoor meet at Michigan Tech.
Team results were not posted.
Individual highlights…
- On the boys side, Houghton’s Benjamin Hemmer won the 200 and 400-meter dashes.
- On the girls side, Violet Amos from Ontonagon took the 200 and 400-meter dashes. Alena Pietila from Hancock won the 800 and 1600-meter runs.

Gibson Cup
The Portage Lake Pioneers took game one of the Gibson Cup series last evening, outscoring the Calumet Wolverines 8-6.
Game two will be played at the Colosseum tonight. If a third game is necessary, it will be played tomorrow at the Dee. Games will begin at 7:30, with coverage starting around 7:15 on KBear 102.3.
College Basketball
NCAA Division I women’s basketball tournament semifinals will be played tonight, as Connecticut faces South Carolina, and UCLA plays Texas. The championship game will be staged on Sunday.
Division I men’s semifinals will be played tomorrow, with the title game on Monday.
Longtime Gogebic Community College basketball coach Dennis Mackey is retiring. Mackey is a Kenton native. After graduating from Ewen-Trout Creek High School, he played basketball for GCC from 1982 to 1984. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Northern Michigan University, and an MBA from Lake Superior State. Mackey joined Gogebic in 1988 as a part-time instructor and women’s basketball coach. Over 19 seasons, he led the Lady Samsons to two regional titles and a national tournament appearance. He transferred to the men’s team, and led them to a pair of regional crowns over 19 seasons. Mackey also served as the college’s athletic director for seven years, and filled in as the interim AD twice in the ensuing years, all while teaching business classes. GCC dedicated “Coach Mackey Court” in his honor in 2024.
NHL
The Red Wings picked up a much-needed win, besting the Flyers 4-2 last night. Alex DeBrincat scored twice for Detroit, and Patrick Kane and Lucas Raymond each found the net once. John Gibson rebounded from his recent struggles and made 32 saves.
The Wings entertain the Rangers tomorrow afternoon. Coverage will begin at 12:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit is tied with Ottawa and Columbus in the race for the final Eastern Conference wild-card playoff berth, although the Senators own the tiebreaker, and the Blue Jackets have played one more game. The Flyers are two standings points off the pace, and the Capitals are three back. The Wings have seven regular-season games remaining.
NBA
The Pistons outscored the Timberwolves 113-108 last night, in a game that was tight from start to finish. Daniss Jenkins led Detroit with 26 points, and Jalen Duren had 22 points and 14 rebounds.
The Pistons visit the 76ers tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
Tobias Harris left last night’s game in the first quarter, after a blow to his left knee left him limping. Team officials said he suffered a bruise, but there doesn’t appear to be any structural damage. Harris has also been struggling with a hip ailment. His status is day-to-day.
Team officials also said yesterday that Cade Cunningham will miss at least another week, as he recovers from a punctured lung.
The Bucks host the Celtics tonight.
MLB
The Tigers had yesterday off, and host the Cardinals in their home opener this afternoon. Framber Valdez will start against Michael McGreevy. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Before the game, the Tigers will observe a moment of silence to honor team legends Mickey Lolich, Elroy Face and Tom Timmermann, who have passed away since last season. Former Tiger Brandon Inge will throw out the first pitch.
The Brewers also had yesterday off, and open a series at Kansas City tonight. Chad Patrick will pitch against Luinder Avila.
NFL
Former Vikings and Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins has signed a deal with the Raiders. Vegas is expected to take Indiana University quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the first pick in the upcoming NFL draft. The Packers had been among the teams interested in Cousins, as a potential backup to Jordan Love.
