High School
The high school track and field season opens today, as local teams compete at an indoor meet at Michigan Tech.
Gibson Cup
The Gibson Cup series between the Portage Lake Pioneers and the Calumet Wolverines begins tonight. Game one of the best-of-three will be staged at Dee Stadium. Game two will be played at the Colosseum tomorrow night. If a third game is necessary, it will be played Saturday at the Dee. Games will begin at 7:30, with coverage starting around 7:15 on KBear 102.3. The Pioneers have won the series each of the past three years.
NHL
The Red Wings visit the Flyers tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Former Michigan State goalie Trey Augustine has signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Red Wings. He was Detroit’s second-round pick in the 2023 draft. He’ll forego his senior year with the Spartans, and join the Grand Rapids Griffins for the remainder of this season.
NBA
The Pistons welcome the Timberwolves tonight.
The Bucks dropped a 119-113 decision to the Rockets last night. Ousmane Dieng scored 36 for Milwaukee.
The Bucks host the Celtics tomorrow night.
MLB
The Tigers’ slow start continued with a 1-0 loss to the Diamondbacks yesterday. Corbin Carroll’s first-inning homer off Tarik Skubal provided the game’s only run. Skubal scattered six hits over seven innings, and took the tough loss. Detroit’s best scoring chance came in the sixth inning, when Kevin McGonigle hit a one-out triple. Gleyber Torres followed with a line drive that was caught by the first baseman, who tossed the ball across the infield to double McGonigle off third base.
The Tigers have today off, and head to Detroit for their home season-opener against the Cardinals tomorrow. Framber Valdez will start against Michael McGreevy. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers pounded the Rays 8-2 yesterday. Jacob Misiorowski gave up two runs over six innings, and left with the game tied, thanks to a two-run Brice Turang homer. Milwaukee surged ahead with a six-run eighth inning, ignited by a clutch bases-loaded single by Christian Yelich. Garrett Mitchell followed with a two-run double.
The Brewers also have today off, and open a series at Kansas City tomorrow. Chad Patrick will pitch against Michael Wacha.
