Even with more snow on the way to the Keweenaw Peninsula, Hancock has a few special snowflakes in town.
Before, during and after Heikinpaiva’s celebrations, Sew Cranky has operated its annual snowflake challenge. With the event now come to an end, Ginger Alberti says it’s time to judge this year’s submissions and display the hand-sewn snowflakes Copper Country residents created.
“The smiles on everyone’s faces when they held up their finished snowflakes pretty much screams success!” Alberti said.
More than 80 snowflakes were made in 2026 in the annual challenge. On Saturday, the community can join the community dance at the Finnish American Heritage Center, where Sew Cranky plans to display this year’s snowflakes.
Participants in the challenge can pick up their designs on Saturday or anytime at the Sew Cranky shop. At Saturday’s dance, music will fill the hall as the community enjoys traditional folk tunes and dances. The evening will include a special debut performance from the Finnish American Folk School Youth Folk Band.
The dance on Saturday begins at 6 p.m. More information about Finnish American traditions in the Copper Country and upcoming events is available online.
