High School
In high school hockey Saturday…
- Hancock and Marquette played to a 7-7 tie. The Bulldogs made a bid to win it when Connor Helminen found the net with 68 seconds remaining in regulation, but Jack Pond’s tally with four seconds left forced extra time. Kirby Storm and Nolan Hanner each had two goals and an assist for Hancock. Ben Keranen and Luciano Paoli each scored once. The Sentinels outshot the Bulldogs 32-26. Hancock ends its regular season with a record of 14-10-3, in fifth place in the Great Lakes Hockey Conference. Marquette finishes at 17-7-3, in second place.
- Houghton ended its regular season with a 6-3 victory at Green Bay Notre Dame. Goals by Gunner Flachs and Cale Repp gave the Gremlins an early lead. Connor Arko and Noah Maillette increased the lead to 4-1 at the end of the second period. The Titans narrowed the margin with two goals early in the third period, but Jack Sayen provided some insurance with two minutes remaining, and Arko found the empty net in the closing seconds for his second goal of the night. The Gremlins finish their season with a record of 19-6-1, and will be the top seed when the regional tournament opens.
The regional semifinals are set for Wednesday at the SDC. Second-seed Calumet will take on third-seed Jeffers at 5:30, with the broadcast on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3, and on Lite 96.3 Houghton’s Breeze. Top-seed Houghton will play fourth-seed Hancock at 7:30, with the broadcast on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
Calumet and Marquette will play for the U.P. Junior Varsity championship this afternoon. The Copper Kings advanced with a 7-2 victory over Hancock in their semifinal match Saturday. Marquette eliminated Houghton – the score was not reported.
The Copper Kings and Sentinels will face off this afternoon at 3:00 in the championship game at the Hoco. Coverage will begin around 2:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3 and Lite 96.3 Houghton’s Breeze. The consolation game between the Gremlins and Bulldogs will follow.
The Houghton swim team swept its three-way meet against Sault Ste. Marie and Rudyard Saturday.
- The boys team outpointed the Soo 108-93. Rudyard finished third, with 20 points. Individual winners for the Gremlins included Tate Evans in 200 individual medley, Alex Svanidze in the 100 butterfly, Adam Hemmer in the 500 freestyle, Kameron Johnson in the 100 backstroke, and Isaac Neva in diving.
- On the girls’ side, Houghton earned 151 points, Rudyard had 89 and Soo 69. Gremlins’ individual winners included Aya Keteri in the 200 freestyle, Kayleigh Dart in the 50 freestyle, Evelyn LaTendressein the 100 freestyle, Fiona Brassard in the 100 backstroke, and Meg Ruohonen in diving.
The Gremlins now prepare for the U.P. Championships at Marquette, with diving on Friday, and swimming on Saturday.

College Hockey
Teydon Trembecky’s goal in overtime – his second of the game – lifted the 17th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team to a 5-4 victory at Lake Superior State Saturday night. The Huskies trailed 4-2 early in the third period, with early goals by Max Koskipirtti and Isaac Gordon. Trembecky’s first goal of the game narrowed the gap, and Jack Anderson’s goal with two minutes left in regulation forced overtime. Owen Bartoszkiewicz made 39 saves.
The Northern Michigan hockey team dropped a 6-0 decision at Ferris State Saturday evening. The Wildcats were outshot 41-25.
College Basketball
The Michigan Tech basketball teams split their games at Wayne State Saturday.
- The women’s squad lost a 68-67 heartbreaker. The Huskies had a couple of chances to win it in the closing seconds, but missed a shot, and then turned the ball over. Kendall Standfest led Tech with 15 points.
- The 13th-ranked men’s team pulled out a 77-73 victory, despite having three starters foul out. Marcus Tomashek scored 23, including a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining to seal the win.
The Northern Michigan squads split their contests at Purdue Northwest Saturday.
- The 12th-ranked women’s team blew past the Pride 82-57. Alyssa Hill scored 19.
- The 17th-ranked men fell 88-76. The game was close until the Pride went on a 12-0 run in the closing minutes. Dylan Kuehl scored 27.
GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers blew out the Eagle River Falcons 8-1 Saturday night. The Pioneers will entertain the De Pere Deacons this afternoon at 1:00.
The Calumet Wolverines v the Deacons Saturday night – no report.
NHL
The Red Wings are off until February 26th because of the Olympic break.
NBA
The Pistons and Bucks are off until late next week because of the All Star break.
