Houghton County subcommittees continue work toward presenting a new jail construction plan to the public.
Near the end of 2025, the Houghton County Commission split the responsibilities of managing a county jail project into three subcommittees, with assistance from the community and several individuals working on the project. Recently, the Sharon Avenue Property subcommittee rescinded its suggestion to the Board of Commissioners to tear down the existing building on the property, in favor of a plan that could convert the former church for office and courtroom space. No actions or recommendations have been made by the County Held Properties committee headed by Commissioner Joel Keranen. That committee last met at the start of December 2025.
This evening, the Jail Committee will meet to further discuss old business that includes reviewing social media engagement and online community feedback, exploring federal and state funding opportunities, and a report from the Jail Needs subcommittee.
New items on tonight’s agenda will begin to develop a moveable timeline for when the county will need to accomplish pre-project goals, discuss a potential date to present a millage request, and set a date to meet in March.
The Houghton County Jail Committee maintains the project’s main planning team, where related committees work on challenges related to building a new Houghton County jail. The Jail Committee is an eight-member group made of Houghton County commissioners, county employees, representatives of local political groups, and experienced engineering and construction professionals.
The meeting tonight will begin at 4 p.m. Copper Country Republicans, Houghton County Democrats, and the Copper Country League of Women Voters will share information on the Houghton County jail project as leaders continue to work out details.
