Folk living in a place that feels like always winter make the most out of the cold and snow. And just because the temperatures drop doesn’t mean residents stop having adventures, celebrating or building connections in their communities.
Visit Keweenaw plans to again host a special contest that could only happen in the Keweenaw Peninsula, a Snowfall Guessing Contest.
In the last couple of years, the tourism bureau has organized the guessing contest to help build the community’s connections through the winter season and promote the region’s winter-based recreation opportunities.
In the first year of the contest, Visit Keweenaw tracked an unusually warm winter that surprised the region and left behind 160 inches of snow. Last year’s contest ended in stark contrast, when the Keweenaw County Road Commission recorded over 300 inches of snowfall during the season.
So far, the Copper Country has received close to 120 inches of snow, even before recent lake effect snow added another 14 inches to this winter’s count.
The Visit Keweenaw Snowfall Guessing Contest uses the Keweenaw County Road Commission’s snowfall tracker for the official number. Contestants can submit their guess for the season’s snowfall online. The contest will continue to accept submissions until January 19th. The tourism bureau will track the snowfall until April 30th, and will announce this winter’s winner soon after.
