Gale Eilola, in his many years of service, has faithfully executed the duties of County Commissioner for the first district serving as both Vice Chairman and Chairman for several years. Whereas Gale Eilola has served with integrity, thoughtfulness, and a true commitment to public service. Gale Eilola especially took great pride and passion in his work with the Baraga County Fair, putting in endless volunteer hours to make any resounding success year after year. Whereas the Baraga County Board of Commissioners gratefully acknowledges Mr. Eilola’s dedicated service on numerous regional boards and committees, including but not limited to the Baraga County Finance Committee, the Baraga County Personnel Committee, the Baraga Houghton Keweenaw Child Development Board, the Western UP Planning and Development Region Commission, the UP State Fair Authority, the Upward Talent Council, the Western UP District Health Board, as well as many, many others. Therefore, it is resolved that the Baraga County Board of Commissioners wishes to publicly express its appreciation to Gale Eilola for his many years of dedicated public service. Baraga County will need to appoint a new commissioner following December’s meeting. Last evening, Gale Eilola completed his 32-year service with the Baraga County Board of Commissioners. He began serving Baraga County in March 1992 after he was appointed to the board of commissioners. He successfully won reelection bids for district one.

In addition to Eilola’s departure, the board of commissioners accepted Chad Cichosz’s resignation. The board of commissioners will fill vacancies in January. The candidate that fills the seat will need to run for reelection in May 2025. District one Baraga county voters voted for James Niemala to fill Eilola’s seat.
Other actions by the board of commissioners to close out the year included appointing Eilola to the Copper Country Mental Health Board as a citizen representative. The board also appointed Nicholas Lindemann to the Board of directors for the Baraga County Road Commission and Mike Stafford to represent townships on the Western Upper Peninsula Materials Management Plan Committee.
